Calvin Johnson has been making up songs about the feeling inside under a number of guises: Beat Happening, Halo Benders, Dub Narcotic Sound System. Now here is the album, What Was Me (KLP117), that you have all been waiting for: Calvin hardcore, straight up solo. Armed only with an acoustic guitar, a capella 40% of the time. What Was Me also contains the gorgeous duet with Mirah “Ode to St. Valentine” and a duet with Beth Ditto (the Gossip) on “Lightnin Rod for Jesus”. Holy mackerel! Get on this thing! Calvin will be playing shows all over the Northwest this month to celebrate, beginning this weekend with the opening event at the Portland Zine Symposium July 12. Calvin will also be leading a workshop at the Symposium on the History of Zines July 13. This is followed by a tour of Seattle July 15 and 16 (five shows in two days!). In August, Calvin will partake in the Come Along! tour with Little Wings. The Come Along! tour consists of playing mostly campgrounds and beaches throughout the state of California. Show up! Bring some tofu dogs! There is gonna be a campfire.
